The Playground Is A Wreck

For the past month or so, I've been playing around in my sandbox with an elastic layout. Things were coming along pretty well, when suddenly I threw a fit over the increasing slowness of my web host, DreamHost. I've been with them for about 3 years and we've had our ups and downs, but lately my patience has worn thin.

The middle of a redesign is probably not the best time to switch web hosts. But considering this is primarily a playground, I've thrown caution to the wind and uploaded the whole darn dev site to Media Temple. I've heard a lot of good things about them and am hoping like mad that they're true.

So a word of warning while this half-constructed heap of code changes home—watch for teetering beams and chunks of falling plaster.

This ought to be interesting.

So is Dreamhost a good bet for hosting our site?

IMO, the level of hosting would be the basis for my choice. Dedicated Server? Media Temple, no question. Shared Hosting? Either of them, really. I have never heard anything bad about DreamHost, BUT I have heard only great things about Media Temple, in fact, I know of several site owners on Media Temple and says it's reliable and you can always reach someone. Whatever you do, NEVER use Gate.com

I used Dreamhost in the olden days, and left only because I got a better deal from a local web host. As time has passed, Dreamhost looks like the better deal again.
I recently took over management of a site hosted at MediaTemple and started wondering if speed and uptime would be better at Dreamhost. Probably "grass is always greener" syndrome.
I did give up struggling with setting up Drupal multisite on MediaTemple, 'cuz they don't offer a clear domain parking option and their subdomain arrangement threw me. I'll try again when I upgrade to Drupal 6.

According to author Ray Oldenburg, everybody needs a third place (besides home [1] and workplace [2]). In lieu of the local colesium, neighborhood bar or corner store, the Internet has become the third place for many people in America—a virtual hangout where conversation flourishes, friendships are made and citizens meet. Often in our pajamas.

I've been hanging out here since 1996, building web sites, making friends, and learning. This blog is my small contribution to the lively, never-ending dialogue.

Thanks for stopping by.
