Writing valid XHTML markup is not really as difficult as it sounds. If you learn a few new rules, you'll be marking up code in valid XHTML in no time. The best way to familiarize yourself with valid markup is to view source on site pages that have passed one of the validation services, such as W3C's Markup Validation Service. Here is a quick rundown of the basics to help you get started.
Now that I've worked on a few projects with Drupal v4.7, I have to say that I'm impressed as all get-out with it. Personally, I can't think of any reason not to use it on a majority of projects. But Drupal is my personal preference, and I'm not sure it would be the best one for everyone.
I was glad to hear that Douglas Bowman intends to start blogging more again. His StopDesign has long been one of my favorite blogs. For good reason it seems, because right off the bat he wrote something that struck a cord in me.
For the past few weeks I've been stuck in bed because of a minor illness. For two weeks my primary contact with the outside world has been through this laptop, and it has been an eye-opening experience. Never before did I grasp the true power of the Internet. Oh sure, I knew all it was capable of, but knowing and being completely dependent it on are two different things.
If you're just starting out with Drupal, this book is an excellent introduction that will help you get up and running more quickly. Written for beginners, it gives a nice overview of what Drupal is capable of and step-by-step instructions for setting up a basic installation.

I'm a few days late (what else is new?) with my Top Ten list, but what the heck. 2006 was an amazing year for the web...and for me, personally. I've gone from being a hard-core freelancing loner to a member of a university web development team. With a little gentle guidance, I've learned how to work as a team player--to share my projects with others and not think of them as "my" projects. (Oops. Well, most of the time, anyway.) Mostly, I've had an opportunity to learn from one of the most talented, dedicated, creative and delightfully quirky groups of people I've ever had the pleasure to meet.I'm a few days late (what else is new?) with my Top Ten list, but what the heck. 2006 was an amazing year for the web...and for me, personally.
We have a nice New Years' tradition. With two other families who we've known since before we became families, we journey to Tucson and (without malice) take over a resort or hotel. The kids run wild; the adults eat and drink and talk and pretend not to notice the boys are lobbing water balloons over the balcony railing again. We get to know a lot of security folks on a first name basis this way.
